Hiring a DJ and MC in Accra: prices, questions to ask, and the rider

The DJ and the MC decide whether your reception feels like an event or a waiting room. They are also the two vendors most often booked on a recommendation and a phone call, with no written scope, which is why they are the two most likely to surprise you on the day. DJ, MC, or both

A DJruns the music and, in most Ghanaian packages, brings and operates the sound system. A good one reads the room, handles the transition from highlife at the elders' tables to afrobeats once the floor opens, and keeps the sound levels workable for speeches. An MC runs the programme: introductions, the order of speeches and toasts, the cake, the first dance, the thank-yous, and the gaps that appear when the caterer is late. 1. Hours. Arrival time for setup, the hour the music starts, and the hour it stops. Overtime rate per hour, in writing.
2. Equipment.Number and size of speakers, how many wireless microphones, whether lighting is included, and who supplies the generator or fuel if the venue's power is unreliable.
3. People. Is it one DJ or a DJ plus a sound engineer? Does the MC bring an assistant to manage the running order?
4. The playlist process. When they want your must-play and do-not-play lists, and whether they take live requests from guests.
5. Backup. A second laptop or controller on site, and a named stand-in if the DJ or MC falls ill.

The rider

Professional DJs and MCs will send a short rider: what they need from you and the venue.
